Change. Some people fear change while others embrace it. My natural hair has allowed me to analyze various aspects of my life. Due to my natural hair, I've become more health conscious- realizing how wonderfully our bodies are constructed and exercising caution about my food choices.
Additionally, it's challenged my definitions of my beauty, self-respect, and being a member of the African disaspora.
Last but not least, I actually enjoy exercising without fear of sweating out my hair and more.
Being natural is liberating, I do not fear water( well- sometimes I do...), I do not fear humidity, I do not fear rejecting conformity.
I embrace all of the indiosyncrities that form my identity.
" Natural hair isn't political"-
I always find it interesting when I read articles that are quick to mention that being natural isn't a political thing, that one is simply is doing it to take better care of themselves. However, I realize that many people are so uncomfortable challenging others' beliefs that we stay complacent. How isn't it a political statement when you are clearly rejecting decades and even centuries old ideology that imposed the belief that if you have curly or kinky hair that it must be corrected? When you're rejecting something, you're taking a political stance! I do believe that there is a way to help others realize this that comes from a loving place and not a place of condemnation. I'm the first to admit that I haven't always presented this in a loving way...
WOOOO! That was heavy! I still have some growing to do!
What about you, has natural hair has changed your perceptions? Or is hair just hair to you?? Talk to me!
